Who We Are
Pretty Good Group Inc. ("Pretty Good Group," "PGG," "we," "us" or "our") is a media company based in Los Angeles, California, with a team in New York. We own and operate three publications: Must Do (readmustdo.com), The Bantr (readbantr.com) and Place Notes (readplacenotes.com) (together, the "Publications"). The Publications are brands of Pretty Good Group Inc., not separate companies.
This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with and the choices you have. It applies to prettygoodgroup.com, our contact and job application forms, our newsletters, and other services we operate that link to this policy (together, the "Services"). Questions? Email hello@prettygoodgroup.com.
Information We Collect
We collect only what we need to run the Services. It falls into a few groups.
Contact and advertising inquiries. When you use the contact form on prettygoodgroup.com, we collect your name, company, email address, budget range, the publications and markets you're interested in, your timeline and your message.
Job applications. When you apply through our /apply page, we collect your name, email address, the role you're applying for, your location, your LinkedIn, portfolio or resume link, and your message. Our application form doesn't accept file uploads. If you link to a resume or portfolio, we'll view what you share at that link.
Newsletter subscriptions. When you subscribe to Must Do, The Bantr or Place Notes, we collect your email address, the newsletter you signed up for and how you found us. Some signup forms also let you share your name or city, which is optional. Our newsletters also record delivery and engagement information, such as whether an email was delivered, opened or clicked. See Section 6 for details.
Emails and other messages. If you email us or message one of our social media accounts, we receive your message and the details that come with it, such as your name, email address or public profile information.
Website usage information. When you visit prettygoodgroup.com, our website hosting and analytics provider collects technical and usage information. This includes pages viewed, referring websites, browser and device type, and approximate country or region. We use this information in aggregate. See Section 5.
Business contacts. If you work with us as an advertiser, brand partner, agency or supplier, we keep business contact details and our correspondence with you.
We don't ask for sensitive personal information (such as government ID numbers, financial account details, health information or precise location) through the Services. Please don't include it in forms or messages.
How We Use Your Information
We use personal information to:
- Respond to your inquiry and discuss advertising, sponsored content and brand partnerships with you
- Review job applications, contact candidates and make hiring decisions
- Send the newsletters you've subscribed to, send service messages about your subscription, and manage your subscription and preferences
- Understand how our newsletters and the sponsored content and ads in them perform, and report aggregated results to sponsors and advertisers
- Understand, in aggregate, how people use our site so we can improve it
- Keep the Services secure and working, and prevent fraud, spam and misuse
- Keep business records, and meet our legal, tax and accounting obligations
- Enforce our Terms and Conditions, and establish or defend legal claims
How We Share Information
We share personal information only as described here:
- Service providers. These are companies that help us run the Services and our business, such as our website hosting and analytics provider, our email and newsletter service providers, and our productivity tools. They may use your information only to provide services to us.
- Legal and safety reasons. We may disclose information when we believe in good faith that the law, a court order or a valid legal request requires it. We may also do so to protect the rights, property or safety of Pretty Good Group, our readers or others.
- Business transfers. If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization or sale of assets, personal information may be transferred as part of that transaction. It will remain subject to the protections in this policy.
- With your direction. We may share information with others when you ask us to or agree to it.
Our business includes sponsored content, newsletter advertising and brand partnerships. We may share aggregated or de-identified audience statistics with brands and agencies, such as total readership, opens or clicks, that don't identify you. We don't give sponsors or advertisers your name, email address or other personal information, and we don't sell or rent our newsletter subscriber lists. See Section 6.
We don't share personal information with third parties for their own direct marketing purposes.
We don't sell your personal information.
Cookies and Analytics
We use privacy-focused analytics provided by our website hosting and analytics provider to see how prettygoodgroup.com is used, such as page views and traffic sources, in aggregate. As we understand it, these analytics don't use cookies to track you across websites.
We don't currently use advertising or tracking cookies, pixels or similar technologies on prettygoodgroup.com. Our website hosting provider may use strictly necessary technologies to deliver and secure the site.
If this changes, we'll update this policy first. Where the law requires it, we'll also ask for your consent before using non-essential cookies or similar technologies.
Our newsletters use email open and click tracking, which works differently. See Section 6. The publication sites and social platforms we link to may use their own cookies and technologies. See Section 11.
Do Not Track. Some browsers let you send a "Do Not Track" signal to the websites you visit. There's no common standard for how websites should respond to these signals, and prettygoodgroup.com doesn't currently change how it works when it receives one. We don't track visitors across third-party websites over time, and we don't knowingly allow other companies to do so through our Services, other than service providers working on our behalf.
Global Privacy Control. Some browsers and extensions let you send a Global Privacy Control ("GPC") signal, which tells websites you don't want your personal information sold or shared for targeted advertising. We don't sell your personal information or share it for targeted advertising, so there is currently nothing for a GPC signal to turn off. If that changes, we'll update this policy first and explain how we respond to GPC signals.
Newsletters
This section explains how our newsletters (Must Do, The Bantr and Place Notes) handle your information. The rest of this policy also applies to them.
Signing up. When you subscribe, we collect your email address and the newsletter or newsletters you choose. Some signup forms also ask for your name or city. These are optional, and we use them to personalize your newsletter, such as greeting you by name or highlighting things to do near you. We also record where you signed up, such as the website, page, form, campaign or referral link you used. Our systems may record technical details of your signup, such as the date and time, your IP address and your browser or device, so we can keep a record of your subscription and spot fake or automated signups.
Your consent. We send our newsletters to people who have signed up for them. Depending on the signup form, we may send a confirmation email asking you to confirm your address before your subscription starts. If you get a confirmation email you didn't expect, you can ignore it and we won't add you. We don't add people to our newsletters from purchased or rented email lists.
How we use newsletter information. We use it to:
- Send you the newsletters you chose, and personalize them where you've given us your name or city
- Confirm, manage and keep a record of your subscription and preferences
- Send service messages about your subscription
- Understand which stories, features, sponsored content and ads our readers find useful, so we can improve our newsletters
- Report aggregated results to sponsors and advertisers
- Keep our list healthy, for example by removing addresses that bounce or haven't engaged with our emails in a long time
- Run referral or sharing programs you choose to take part in
- Prevent spam, fraud and misuse
Open and click tracking. Like most email newsletters, ours use common technologies to tell us whether an email was opened and which links were clicked. Each email may include a small, invisible image (often called a pixel). When your email app loads images, the pixel tells us that the email was opened, when it was opened, the type of device or email app used, and an approximate location based on your IP address. Links in our emails may also pass through a tracking link that records the click before taking you to the destination. We link this information to your subscription so we can see how individual emails and links perform, measure overall engagement, and keep our list up to date. Some email apps load images automatically or through a privacy service, so open data isn't always accurate.
How to limit open and click tracking. You can turn off automatic image loading in your email app or use its privacy features. This stops the pixel from reporting your opens, although images in the email won't show. Clicks on tracked links are still recorded when you click them, so if you don't want a click recorded, don't click the link. Unsubscribing stops all newsletter tracking, because we'll stop sending you newsletters.
Email service providers and other processors. We use email service providers to store our subscriber list, host our signup forms and preference pages, send our newsletters, and measure delivery and engagement. We also use other service providers, such as website hosting, analytics, link tracking, spam and fraud prevention, and productivity tools. These providers process subscriber information on our behalf and may use it only to provide services to us. Some signup or preference pages may be hosted by our email service providers.
Sponsors and advertisers. Our newsletters carry sponsored content and ads, which are labeled so you can tell them apart from our editorial content. Here's how we handle your information when it comes to sponsors and advertisers:
- We don't sell or rent our subscriber lists, and we don't give sponsors or advertisers your name, email address or other personal information
- Links to sponsors and advertisers may be tracked like our other links, so we can tell them how many readers clicked
- Sponsor and advertiser links may include tags that show the visit came from our newsletter, but they don't include your email address or other information that identifies you
- We share results with sponsors and advertisers only in aggregated or de-identified form, such as total opens, clicks or audience size
- We don't let sponsors, advertisers or ad networks place their own tracking pixels in our newsletters. If this changes, we'll update this policy first
- Some links may be affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you buy something. The affiliate partner may use its own cookies when you click through
When you click through to a sponsor's or advertiser's site, or give your information to them directly (for example, by entering a giveaway on their site), they collect and use it under their own privacy policies. See Section 11.
Cross-promotion between our publications. We may tell readers of one of our newsletters about our other Publications, for example with a short mention or ad in the newsletter you already get. We'll only add you to another of our newsletters if you choose to subscribe to it, for example by ticking a box at signup or clicking a subscribe link. We don't share our subscriber lists with other publishers or newsletters.
Referrals and sharing. We may offer ways to share our newsletters, such as a share or forward link, or a referral program that offers rewards for recommending us to friends. If you take part, we'll keep track of signups that come through your unique link. If you earn a reward, we'll collect what we need to deliver it, such as a shipping address. People you refer only get our newsletters if they sign up themselves. Please share only with people you think will want to hear from us. If a program has its own rules, we'll post them where the program is offered.
Service messages. We may send you messages about your subscription itself, such as a confirmation email, a welcome email, changes to your preferences, or important updates to this policy or our terms. These aren't marketing messages. After you unsubscribe, you may get a single message confirming that you've unsubscribed.
Unsubscribing. Every newsletter email includes an unsubscribe link, along with our postal address and a way to contact us. You can also unsubscribe by emailing hello@prettygoodgroup.com, or by using your email app's built-in unsubscribe option where it appears for our emails. We process unsubscribe requests promptly, and in any case within 10 business days. If you subscribe to more than one of our newsletters, you can unsubscribe from each one separately, or email us to unsubscribe from all of them.
After you unsubscribe. We stop sending you that newsletter. We keep a minimal record, such as your email address, the newsletter and the date you unsubscribed, on a suppression list so we don't email you again by mistake, for example if your address is submitted again in the future. Engagement information from before you unsubscribed may stay in our records for a limited time and in aggregated reports that don't identify you. If you ask us to delete your information, we'll keep only what we need on the suppression list to respect your choice. See Sections 7 and 9.
Children and teens. Our newsletters aren't directed to children under 13, and you shouldn't subscribe if you're under 13. See Section 10.
How Long We Keep Information
We keep personal information only as long as we need it for the purposes in this policy, unless the law requires us to keep it longer. In general:
- Inquiries and business correspondence: for as long as we're in discussions or working together, then up to 2 years after our last contact, unless we need it longer for an ongoing business relationship, legal or accounting reasons
- Job applications: up to 12 months after the role is filled, so we can consider you for similar roles, unless you ask us to delete it sooner. If you join us, your application becomes part of your employment record.
- Newsletter subscriptions: until you unsubscribe, then a minimal record (such as your email address on a suppression list) so we respect your choice. See Section 6.
- Analytics: kept in aggregated form that doesn't identify you
When we no longer need information, we delete it or make it anonymous.
How We Protect Information
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect personal information. Examples are encrypted connections (HTTPS), access controls and reputable service providers. No website, email or online service is completely secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security. Please don't send sensitive information through our forms or by email.
Your Choices
You can ask us to access, correct or delete the personal information we hold about you by emailing hello@prettygoodgroup.com. Tell us what you're asking for, and we may need to confirm your identity before we act.
You can unsubscribe from any of our newsletters at any time. Use the link in each email or email hello@prettygoodgroup.com. We process unsubscribe requests within 10 business days. To limit open and click tracking, see Section 6.
California "Shine the Light." California Civil Code Section 1798.83 lets California residents ask certain businesses for information about the personal information they've shared with third parties for those third parties' own direct marketing purposes. We don't share personal information with third parties for their own direct marketing purposes. If you have a question about this, email hello@prettygoodgroup.com with "Shine the Light" in the subject line.
Children's Privacy
Our Services, including our newsletters, are for a general audience and are not directed to children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we've collected personal information from a child under 13, we'll delete it promptly. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact hello@prettygoodgroup.com and we'll delete it.
We don't sell personal information or share it for targeted advertising, including the personal information of anyone we know is under 16.
Third-Party Sites and Platforms
The Services link to our publication sites (readmustdo.com, readbantr.com and readplacenotes.com), our newsletter service providers' pages, social media platforms (such as Instagram and LinkedIn), and brands, advertisers and businesses featured in our content and newsletters, including sponsored content and ads. Those sites and platforms collect and use information under their own privacy policies and cookie settings. We don't control them. Please review their policies when you use them.
Where We Process Information
Pretty Good Group is based in the United States, and we and our service providers store and process information in the United States.
Changes to This Policy
We'll update this policy when our practices, the Services or the law change. When we do, we'll change the "Last updated" date at the top, and the updated policy takes effect on that date. If a change is significant, we'll give more notice where the law requires it, such as a notice on our site or by email, including by email to newsletter subscribers. If we start using cookies or similar technologies that need your consent, we'll ask first where the law requires it.
